Suffragette Remembered

Business Professional Women Gisborne members lay flowers on the grave of Margaret Seivwright at Makaraka Cemetery. The group also took the time to mark the dual occasions of International Women's Day (on March 8) and Margaret's birthday on the March 19. The group was led by Gillian Ward who is part of the Makaraka Cemetery Group.


Born in 1844, Margaret Seivwright was the leader of the Gisborne branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union New Zealand, which was active in advocacy on women's issues , and was a major force in the women's suffrage movement.
